Crucial X10 not recognised? The data is often still there.

The Crucial X10 is small, fast and ruggedly built — and when it fails, unscrewing it does not help. Inside the enclosure there is no replaceable SSD but a single board with controller, memory and USB-C port. That is exactly where we start.

Why the X10 is different from an SSD in an enclosure

The X10 and X10 Pro work with a Silicon Motion controller from the SM232x series that speaks USB directly. There is no bridge chip and no M.2 SSD that could be plugged into another computer. Access to the data therefore goes through exactly this controller — and this controller is what we work with: on firmware and administration faults we put it into a technical mode and reconstruct the damaged administration.

Common fault patterns

Crucial X10 & X10 Pro

Whether logical or physical — in most cases the memory is still intact. The diagnosis shows what exactly is wrong.

Not recognised

No drive in Explorer or Finder, on any computer: usually the electronics or the controller — the memory as a rule stays intact.

Disconnects, 0 bytes, wrong size

Disappears while copying, reports 0 bytes or an unfamiliar identifier: the internal administration is damaged.

USB-C port & drops

Loose contact, snapped port or drop damage — the board is repaired under the microscope.

Deleted or formatted

Deleted or formatted by accident — in many cases we recover deleted files. Disconnect immediately.

How do I tell what is wrong?

From symptom to cause.

Nobody searches for a fault pattern. You hear a noise or read a message — and the most pressing question is: may I switch the device on one more time?

  • Symptom

    No response, on any computer

    Likely cause

Electronics: the power supply, the port or the controller itself. The memory is as a rule untouched by it.

    What to do now

Do not try it on one device after another. Every attempt drives current through the faulty component.

  • Symptom

    Recognised, but disappears while copying

    Likely cause

First rule out the cable and the port. If it persists, the controller drops out when accessing damaged areas or administrative data.

    What to do now

Try once with a different cable directly on the computer, without a hub. If that does not work: stop.

  • Symptom

Reports 0 bytes, a few MB or a technical identifier

    Likely cause

Emergency mode of the controller: it cannot load its firmware or translation table and registers with a factory identity.

    What to do now

Do not initialise, do not format, no firmware update.

  • Symptom

Windows or macOS wants to format the drive

    Likely cause

The file system is damaged — often after unplugging during a write operation.

    What to do now

Cancel. Do not format, no repair with chkdsk or Disk Utility.

  • Symptom

Only works when the plug sits at a particular angle

    Likely cause

A cracked solder joint on the USB-C port.

    What to do now

Stop using it. If the connection drops while writing, a damaged file system comes on top.

  • Symptom

Dead after a drop or moisture

    Likely cause

IP65 protects against dust and water jets, not against submersion. A hard drop can crack solder joints despite the protective sleeve.

    What to do now

Do not plug it in, do not dry it with heat. Send it in directly.

Methods & technology

How we approach an X10

First comes the diagnosis under the microscope and on the lab power supply: does the board draw current, does the controller respond, is the port intact? If electronics are damaged, they are repaired until the controller works again. If it registers without releasing the data, we put it into a technical mode, reconstruct the damaged administration and copy the content write-protected onto our systems. From then on all work is done on the copy, never on the original.

The technology behind it

Why this takes so much effort.

No jargon for its own sake — the reasons from which price, duration and prospects of success follow.

Why desoldering does not help

The X10 and X10 Pro encrypt with AES-256 in hardware. The key is created in the controller and never leaves it. Desoldering the memory chips and reading them externally therefore yields nothing but ciphertext. There is no way around bringing the original electronics back to work.

X10 Pro: password protection

The X10 Pro additionally offers password protection. If it is set, the data recovery needs this password too — the encryption is not broken. If it has been forgotten, it is worth checking password managers, notes and the keychain beforehand.

exFAT and unplugging

Portable SSDs travel between Mac, Windows, console and tablet. exFAT, the usual file system for this, is practical for exchange but keeps no journal: if the drive is unplugged during a write operation, the file system’s administration can be left in a half-finished state. The files are then usually still there; only the route to them is damaged.

Up to 8 TB in 32 grams

With up to 8 TB, the X10 is for many people their only archive: photos, video projects, backups. High capacity in a small space means densely packed memory — all the more important is controlled imaging that does not endlessly repeat reads of weak areas.

SM232x: one chip for USB, memory and key

The SM232x combines the USB interface, memory control and encryption in a single chip. It maintains the translation table, spreads the write load across the memory and clears deleted areas. If it falls into an emergency mode, the X10 registers with 0 bytes or a factory identity — the memory content is then as a rule still fully there. These are exactly the controllers we work with: we put them into a technical mode, reconstruct the administration and secure the content.

Warranty replaces the device, not the data

Crucial grants a three-year warranty on the X10, and it remains in place even after the withdrawal from the consumer business. A warranty claim gets you a new drive or your money back — you do not get the old one with your data back. Recover first, then claim.

First aid

Before you do anything.

Bring the medium in or send it to us. The Economy diagnosis is free — you find out what is possible before anything costs money.

First aid for data loss →

  • Take the medium out of service immediately — every further use can accelerate the loss.

  • No recovery attempts with tools from the internet.

  • Do not open the device or medium yourself.

  • Take it to a reliable data recovery specialist — analysis first, then a quote.

Please do not

The mistakes that make it expensive.

Almost every well-meant reflex makes the damage worse. That is why you find not only the rule here but also the reason — nobody follows an instruction without one.

  • Do not prise it open or unscrew it.

There is no SSD to plug in elsewhere. Board and memory are permanently joined, and opening it easily damages something.

  • Do not try it on one computer, console, hub and dock after another.

Every attempt stresses a faulty component — and a half-recognised drive may get written to in the process.

  • No firmware update with Storage Executive while the fault persists.

The update writes into exactly the area that is damaged.

  • Do not format or initialise, even if the system prompts you to.

A wrong size or an unreadable file system does not mean the drive is empty.

  • Do not send it in under warranty before the data has been recovered.

It is the device that gets exchanged, not the content. The original does not come back.

Prices

What this roughly costs.

The fixed prices of SSD data recovery apply to the X10 — it is billed like any other SSD. What counts are the fault pattern and the capacity. Before every recovery you receive a written quote and decide freely.

Questions

Answered briefly.

What does data recovery cost?

We work with transparent fixed prices based on the fault pattern — depending on the medium from €99, €299 or €499; in cases of total damage individually. Before every recovery you receive a written quote and decide freely whether we continue.

Do I pay even if no data is recovered?

The Economy diagnosis is free — if you decline afterwards, no costs arise. With Standard and Emergency the diagnostic fee (€99 or €249) applies even if you decline; it is not offset against a later recovery. The recovery itself is only charged after your approval.

How long does it take?

Depending on the tariff, the diagnosis takes about 5 working days (Economy), 2 working days (Standard) or one working day (Emergency) — with Emergency, the same working day if the medium arrives before 12 noon. How long the recovery itself takes depends on the fault pattern and is stated in the quote.

Is my data safe with you?

Yes. We work in line with the GDPR, pass nothing on to third parties and never outsource. Your data is stored exclusively on our encrypted server and completely deleted after handover.

Can I send the medium in?

Yes. Shipping both ways is included in every diagnosis tariff; with Standard and Emergency we collect the medium from you. Or you come to our lab in Frankfurt-Sachsenhausen without an appointment.

My Crucial X10 is no longer recognised. Is the data gone?

In most cases not. If an X10 is no longer recognised on any computer, it is usually the electronics or the controller that are affected, not the memory. Because the X10 encrypts, the original electronics have to be repaired or the controller put into a technical mode. That is exactly what we do in our lab in Frankfurt.

Can I unscrew the Crucial X10 and connect the SSD directly?

No. The X10 does not contain an M.2 SSD but a single board whose controller speaks USB directly. There is nothing to plug in elsewhere, and prising it open easily damages components. Send the drive in unopened.

How much does data recovery from a Crucial X10 cost?

The fixed prices of SSD data recovery apply: €299 for logical errors such as deleted files or formatting, €499 for physical defects up to 1 TB, plus €100 per further TB — so €599 for a 2 TB X10 and €799 for a 4 TB one. Total damage such as water or fire is calculated individually. Before every recovery you receive a written quote.

What is different about the X10 Pro compared with the X10?

Technically both are built similarly: a controller that speaks USB directly, and encrypted memory on a single board. The X10 Pro additionally offers password protection. If it is set, the data recovery needs the password too. Procedure and prices are the same.

Should I make a warranty claim with Crucial for the faulty X10 first?

Not if the data matters to you. In a warranty case the drive is exchanged or the purchase price refunded — the old drive with your data does not come back. Have the data recovered first, then make the claim.

Crucial has withdrawn from the consumer business. Who can help with a faulty X10?

In December 2025 Micron announced that it would give up the Crucial brand for consumers; the warranty remains in place. Data recovery does not depend on the manufacturer: we work on the X10 in our lab in Frankfurt, with a diagnosis before the recovery and your approval before anything happens.
