Why deleted data on an SSD is usually really gone
The most widespread misconception in data recovery: “deleted is never really deleted”. For hard drives that is often true. For SSDs it usually is not — and the reason lies in the design of the memory itself.
Why deleting on a hard drive barely deletes anything
On a hard drive every location can be overwritten directly. So when you delete a file, nothing at all is overwritten — the operating system merely removes the entry in the table of contents and marks the blocks as free. The magnetic patterns remain until something new is eventually written over them. That is precisely why deleted files can often still be found there weeks later.
Why flash memory works differently
An SSD cannot simply overwrite. It is written page by page but erased only in considerably larger blocks. To change four kilobytes the SSD would therefore have to empty an entire block — which is why it does not. It writes the new version to a free location and notes in an internal translation table where the current version lies.
This table is the actual core of every SSD. It translates the addresses used by the operating system into physical positions in the memory. Without it the content of the memory chips is only an unsorted collection of fragments.
TRIM: the operating system tells on you
Because the SSD itself does not know which of its data the operating system still needs, there is a command for it. When deleting, the system informs the drive: these address ranges are no longer needed. That is exactly what TRIM is, and it has been active by default everywhere for years.
The SSD then marks the affected ranges as invalid and returns nothing but zeros when reading them — immediately, before anything has been physically erased. In the background, garbage collection then actually clears the blocks so that they can be written to again. This happens regardless of whether you use the device; it is enough for it to have power.
That means the question “deleted or not” is, on a working SSD, usually settled after a short time — and settled for good. No software and no lab can read data that the controller lists as invalid and whose memory cells have already been cleared.

When an SSD recovery works anyway
The controller is faulty
If the SSD is no longer detected, reports an incorrect capacity or an unfamiliar model name, then usually the electronics or the translation table are affected — while the memory content itself is intact. That is precisely why it is a good sign when an SSD no longer appears at all: TRIM was then unable to clean anything up.
The loss was not caused by deletion
Damaged administrative structures, an interrupted copy operation, a corrupt partition table: in these cases the data was not reported as free and is still fully present.
The device has been off since the deletion
Without power nothing happens. Switching off immediately keeps the door open a crack — nothing is guaranteed by that, but it is the difference between “maybe” and “definitely not”.
External SSDs without TRIM pass-through
Some USB enclosures do not pass the command on to the drive. On such devices deleted files behave more like they do on a hard drive. You cannot rely on it — it depends on the enclosure.
And encryption
Many modern SSDs encrypt everything they store within the controller — even when the user has never switched on any encryption. The key is generated inside the controller and does not leave it. That is convenient for quickly erasing the whole drive, but it has an awkward consequence for data recovery: reading out the memory chips alone achieves nothing, because their content is ciphertext. There is no way around getting the original controller working again.

I deleted a file on my SSD and switched the computer off immediately. Any chance?
Possibly. What matters is how much time passed between deletion and shutdown and whether garbage collection did any work during that period. That can only be said with certainty after a diagnosis — the only certainty is that every further start reduces the chance.
Does it help to remove the SSD and connect it to another computer?
No. As soon as the SSD has power it can clean up in the background — regardless of which computer it is attached to and whether anyone is accessing it.
Why is it a good sign, then, if the SSD is no longer detected at all?
Because a controller that is no longer working can no longer clean up either. Such cases are technically more demanding, but the data is often still fully present.
